Harrow Crisp Pear Tree

The Harrow Crisp pear tree is a Canadian-bred European pear variety known for its attractive appearance, excellent flavor, and strong disease resistance. Developed at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research station in Harrow, Ontario, it was introduced in the 1970s as a hybrid between 'Bartlett' and another closely related pear. It is recognized for its resistance to fire blight, a common bacterial disease affecting pears.

 

🌳 Tree Characteristics

  • Mature Height: Typically ranges from 15 to 18 feet when grown on OHxF 87 semi-dwarf rootstock.

  • Growth Habit: Upright and spreading, with a conical shape.

  • Hardiness Zone: Suitable for USDA Zones 4–8, making it adaptable to various climates.

  • Pollination: Not self-fertile; requires cross-pollination with another compatible pear variety such as Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou, or Harrow Gold. Blackstock Berries

  • Fruit Size: Slightly larger than Bartlett pears.

  • Skin Color: Smooth yellow with a red blush.

  • Flesh: Creamy white, fine-textured, and firm, even when fully ripe.

  • Flavor: Mildly sweet and juicy.

  • Storage: Can be stored for up to two months if picked early.

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and fruit production.

  • Soil: Tolerates heavy clay soils, making it suitable for various soil types.

  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is recommended for the first 5–7 years to allow the tree to establish. Once mature, regular pruning helps maintain shape and remove dead wood.

  • Spacing: Plant trees 20–30 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.
